Understanding Our Lodge Officers
The officers of Mojave Elks Lodge #2059 work together to provide leadership, conduct the business of the Lodge, safeguard its resources, preserve its traditions, and help carry out the charitable and fraternal mission of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks.
The Four Chair Officers
The four Chair Officers provide the primary leadership of the Lodge. Each represents one of the four cardinal principles of Elkdom — Fidelity, Charity, Justice, and Brotherly Love — and together they help guide the Lodge throughout the year.
Exalted Ruler — Fidelity
The Exalted Ruler is the presiding officer and principal executive officer of the Lodge. Similar to a president, the Exalted Ruler leads Lodge meetings, provides overall direction, appoints officers and committees as provided by the Laws of the Order, and works with the other officers and members to ensure that Lodge programs, activities, and responsibilities are carried out effectively.
Esteemed Leading Knight — Charity
The Leading Knight is the second-ranking Chair Officer and serves much like a first vice president. The Leading Knight assists the Exalted Ruler in the leadership of the Lodge and is prepared to preside when the Exalted Ruler is absent.
Esteemed Loyal Knight — Justice
The Loyal Knight is the third Chair Officer. This officer supports the Exalted Ruler and Leading Knight, participates in the leadership and business of the Lodge, and is prepared to assume additional responsibility when needed.
Esteemed Lecturing Knight — Brotherly Love
The Lecturing Knight is the fourth Chair Officer. The position supports the other Chair Officers in conducting Lodge business, programs, ceremonies, and activities while continuing to develop the leadership experience needed to serve the Lodge.
Secretary & Treasurer
While the Chair Officers provide much of the Lodge's visible leadership, the Secretary and Treasurer provide two of the most important administrative foundations of the Lodge.
Secretary
The Secretary maintains the official records of the Lodge and handles much of its administrative business. Responsibilities include Lodge correspondence, meeting records and minutes, membership records, reports, notices, and other duties required by the Lodge and the Grand Lodge. The Secretary is often the central point through which the day-to-day business of the Lodge is documented and communicated.
Treasurer
The Treasurer is responsible for the proper handling and accounting of Lodge funds. This includes maintaining financial records, receiving funds as required, making authorized payments, and providing financial information and reports. The Treasurer works closely with the Lodge leadership and Trustees to help ensure that Lodge finances are handled responsibly and in accordance with Elks law and Lodge decisions.
Appointed Officers
The Esquire, Chaplain, Inner Guard, and Tiler are appointed by the Exalted Ruler. Each has a distinct role in helping Lodge meetings and ceremonies operate with the dignity, order, and traditions of the Elks.
Esquire
The Esquire serves in a role similar to a sergeant-at-arms. The Esquire assists the Exalted Ruler in maintaining order and proper ritual procedure, helps conduct initiations and other ceremonies, and carries out duties assigned by the Exalted Ruler.
Chaplain
The Chaplain provides the prayers and invocations that are part of Lodge meetings, memorial services, initiations, and other ceremonies. The office reflects the compassionate and spiritual traditions of the Order and is frequently called upon during times of celebration, remembrance, illness, or loss.
Inner Guard
Stationed at the inner door of the Lodge room during meetings, the Inner Guard helps ensure that those entering are entitled to attend and assists in maintaining the security and proper conduct of the Lodge session.
Tiler
The Tiler is stationed outside the Lodge room during meetings and guards the outer entrance. The Tiler helps protect the privacy of Lodge proceedings and ensures that admission to a session is handled properly.
The Five Trustees
Mojave Lodge has five Trustees, serving staggered terms identified as 1-Year, 2-Year, 3-Year, 4-Year, and 5-Year Trustee. This staggered structure provides continuity from one Lodge year to the next while bringing new leadership and perspective to the Board on a regular basis.
The five Trustees serve together with the four Chair Officers and the Secretary as the Lodge Board of Directors. As members of the Board, they share responsibility for overseeing the business, financial, and property interests of the Lodge in accordance with the Laws of the Order and the authority of the Lodge membership.
Their responsibilities include oversight of Lodge funds and investments, real and personal property, budgets, contracts, maintenance, and other matters entrusted to the Board of Directors.
Although each Trustee is identified by the number of years remaining in their term, these are not five different positions or levels of authority. They are five members of the same governing body with shared responsibilities. The staggered terms help preserve institutional knowledge and leadership continuity while allowing the membership to elect a new Trustee each year.
Together, the Chair Officers, Secretary, Treasurer, appointed officers, and Trustees provide the leadership structure that enables the Lodge to conduct its business, responsibly manage its resources, support its members, uphold the traditions of the Order, and continue serving our community.
